I Document Assistant is an AI-powered feature built into Case Matters Evo that helps you work more efficiently with documents during the working day. Rather than manually reading through lengthy documents to extract key information, you can ask the AI to produce a summary; then use that summary as the basis for client correspondence, all without leaving the system.
Typical use cases include:
Reviewing large incoming documents (such as survey reports, medical records, or contracts) and extracting the key findings.
Producing a shorter, client-friendly version of a technical summary.
Drafting an email to a client based on the document's contents.
⚠️Important: Always review any AI-generated content before acting on it or sharing it with a client. Use your professional judgement to assess whether the output is accurate and complete.

Access AI Document Assistant
You can access the AI Document Assistant directly from the document preview panel within a case timeline.
Open the relevant case in Case Matters.
Navigate to the Timeline tab.
Locate the document you want to review and click on it to open the preview.
Click the Ask AI button at the top of the preview panel to open the AI Document Assistant.
The
The AI Document Assistant panel opens alongside the document preview. You can choose how to display it using the three view toggles in the bottom-left corner of the panel:
Preview only: The document on its own, without the AI panel.
Assistant: The AI Document Assistant panel on its own.
Combined view: Both the document preview and the AI panel side by side.
Produce a document summary
With the AI Document Assistant panel open, you can ask the AI to summarise the document for you.
Click Produce a Summary from the suggested actions listed in the panel.
The AI will begin scanning through the document. You can watch its progress — it breaks the task into a series of steps and ticks through them as it works.
Once complete, a comprehensive summary appears in the panel, covering the key findings and recommendations from the document.
Scroll through the summary to review what the AI has produced.
⚠️Important: Always review the AI's output before acting on it or sharing it. Use your professional judgement to assess whether the summary is accurate and complete.
Refine the summary
Once a summary has been produced, you can refine it further using the follow-up actions in the panel.
Make it shorter: If the summary is too detailed for your purposes (for example, for a client-facing communication), click Make this shorter. The AI will reassess the summary and produce a more succinct version.
Simplify the language: If the summary contains legal or technical terminology that may not be suitable for a client audience, click Explain in simpler terms and the AI will rephrase it in plain English.
🤓Tip: You can apply these refinements in sequence, for example, first shorten the summary, then simplify the language, until you are happy with the result.
Draft a client email
Once you are satisfied with the summary, you can ask the AI to draft an email to the client based on it.
In the AI Document Assistant panel, type your instruction into the prompt field. For example: "Draft an email to the client with the summary using a client-friendly tone."
Press Enter (or click Send) to submit the instruction.
The AI will work through the task and produce a draft email in the panel.
Review the draft carefully.
When you are happy with it, copy the content into a new email and send it to the client.
⚠️Important: Always read through the draft before sending. Adjust the wording as needed to reflect your firm's tone and any specific client context.
