Use Smart Timer in Case Matters

Record, manage, and post time against cases directly from the Smart Hub.

Written by Mark Swales

Smart Timer is the time recording tool within Case Matters that fee earners can use to capture, review, and post time against their cases in a fast and structured way. Accessed from the Smart Hub on the right-hand side of the screen, the Smart Timer slides out as a dedicated panel, staying visible while you continue to work.

Access and use Smart Timer

To access and use Smart Timer, watch our video or follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Smart Hub.

  2. Click the Smart Timer icon.

  3. Select the case and activity type from the list.

    • Both are required before you can start the timer.

  4. Click Confirm Start.

    • The timer begins recording in real time and stays visible on screen.

    • To pause the timer, click the Pause icon.

    • To restart the timer, click the Paly icon.

    • To stop the timer, click the Stop icon.

      • Every time you stop the timer, you automatically add a time entry to the activity log.

  5. Carry out the activity.

  6. When you're finished, click the Stop icon.

📌 Note: If you switch to a different case, the current timer automatically stops.

But you can open and close the slide- out panel at any point without affecting any active timers or recorded entries.

Record time for multiple activities

If you're working on multiple activities throughout the day, you can follow the same steps as above to record separate time records for different activities. Simply select the required case and activity type. If you switch to a different case, the current timer stops automatically and the new timer starts with the newly selected case.

The timer keeps running if you navigate to another page or refresh the browser, so no time is lost.

Post time

You can post time either at the end of the day, or through the Manage option.

End Day

To post all recorded activity in a single operation, recording the time against each related case, follow the steps below:

  • Once all activities for the day are recorded, click End Day.

Manage option

To open the Pending Entries modal, so you can review every unposted entry before deciding which to post, follow the steps below:

  1. From the Smart Timer slide-out panel, click Manage.

  2. In the Pending Entries screen, review your daily time target, pending entries count, and posted entries count at the top of the screen.

  3. Update entries if required, then click Post Entry.

🤓 Tip: You can select multiple entries in a single operation.

Each logged time entry shows the following details:

  • Case.

  • Activity type.
